While reading Ira Weissman,  7 Reasons Why Diamonds Are A Waste Of Your Money i stumbled upon a well researched article by Edward Jay Epstein.

It may well be the cleverest long-term marketing campaign when De Beers created the still prevalent illusion that a diamond is the greatest gift that a man can give his bride on their wedding day. That, a diamond is a sign of love, courtship. That, the bigger the diamond the more is your love for your woman. Right? Wrong!.
